Muscles

The skeletal musculature is spread throughout the entire horse and, together with the skeleton, supports the animal’s posture and movement. Muscle disorders affect different muscles depending on their cause. However, the clinical signs of muscle disorders are often most evident in the large muscle groups in the horse’s hindquarters. Typical signs include performance problems, reluctance to move, stiff gait, lameness, muscle pain, muscle
stiffness and dark-coloured or red urine due to the excretion of muscle pigment. Common muscular diseases include muscle strains, rhabdomyolysis (in its mild form known as tying up), atypical myopathy (caused by ingesting sycamore or box elder seeds), and genetic muscle disorders (e.g. PSSM). A series of laboratory tests are usually required to diagnose such conditions.

Rehabilitation medicine

The field of rehabilitation medicine is concentrated on recovery following surgical procedures, medical movement therapy to treat back pain and abnormal posture, and improving the quality of life of animals suffering from debilitating diseases such as arthritis or neurological impairments.

Diagnostic imaging

Diagnostic imaging is the process of examining a horse using digital X-ray technology, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonant imaging (MRI) and scintigraphy. Nowadays, many of these diagnostic techniques do not require general anaesthesia and can be performed on a standing horse.
