Examples include colic, diarrhoea, lameness, injuries and broken bones. However, there are also some diseases commonly seen in foals but rarely identified in adult horses. Typical clinical signs seen in sick foals, regardless of the affected organ system, include an unwillingness to nurse, behavioural disorders, weakness and an inability to rise. Antibody deficiency due to reduced colostrum (beestings) intake is the most significant risk factor for infections and blood poisoning (sepsis). Other common diseases and disorders include meconium retention, bladder ruptures, umbilical diseases (e.g. navel inflammation, urinary incontinence from the navel), joint inflammations, lung inflammations, congenital malformations (incl. cardiac malformations), and neonatal maladjustment syndrome (e.g. following difficult births or Caesarean sections). Various diagnostic techniques are available; the method chosen depends on the precise clinical signs and disease. Foals’ bodies lack the reserves of adult horses, which is why severely ill newborns rapidly come to need intensive care, with examinations and treatments only a hospital can provide.
