Heart

The heart and blood vessels are part of the cardiovascular system. Common cardiac disorders include cardiac arrhythmias (e.g. atrial fibrillation), valvular regurgitation (leaky heart valves), and congenital malformations. The signs of such conditions are not always observable; however, performance problems, delayed recovery after exertion, difficulty breathing, distended veins and fluid accumulations in the ventral chest and abdomen can occur in the case of severe or advanced conditions. Some cardiac arrhythmias can also result in collapse or sudden death. Clinical examinations often reveal heart murmurs and irregular heartbeats. As a general rule, such findings should be investigated further through cardiac ultrasound examinations and electrocardiograms.

Diagnostic imaging

Diagnostic imaging is the process of examining a horse using digital X-ray technology, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonant imaging (MRI) and scintigraphy. Nowadays, many of these diagnostic techniques do not require general anaesthesia and can be performed on a standing horse.
