Skin

The skin is not only the largest organ in the body – given the protection it provides against external influences, it is also an organ of vital importance. Skin injuries – that is to say, wounds – are very common and can be treated conservatively or with surgery depending on their size and location. Skin diseases can occur anywhere on the surface of the body but commonly appear on the legs, crest and tail. Typical signs of a skin disease include hair loss, redness, secretions, itchiness, swelling, mass lesions and discolouration. Common causes include insect bites, pastern dermatitis, allergic diseases (e.g. insect hypersensitivity, sweet itch), immune diseases and skin tumours (e.g. melanomas, sarcoids). Diagnosing such diseases primarily involves taking skin samples but can also include laboratory tests and allergy tests
