Genital tract

The female genital tract is made up of the ovaries, oviducts, the uterus and the vagina. Typical clinical signs of genital tract diseases in mares include fertility disorders, vaginal discharge and behavioural changes. Common diseases include metritis, uterine cysts, endometriosis and ovarian tumours. Diagnostics relating to fertility and pregnancy, artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilisation, embryo transfer, obstetrics and aftercare of birth
complications (e.g. retained placenta or foaling injuries) are typical areas of treatment.
In the case of male horses, the genital tract is composed of the testicles and epididymis, the spermatic duct, the accessory sex glands and the penis. Issues related to mating and fertility are typical clinical signs of diseases of the male genital tract. Common diseases include inflammations of the penis or testicles, though injuries and tumours are not uncommon. Other areas of treatment include collecting semen for the purpose of artificial insemination with cooled or frozen semen and the castration of stallions.
